nano-retina bionic eye implant

Swiss research company CSEM is now collaborating with Nano-Retina to develop an implantable bionic chip, especially designed to return sight to those blinded by retinal degenerative diseases.

Nano-Retina is developing an ultra-small, high resolution and easy to implant, artificial retina designed to restore sight. This bionic retina incorporates various nano-size components in one tiny, flat implant, approximating the size of a child’s fingernail bed. Nano-Retina has entrusted CSEM with the development of an artificial retinal chip.

The aim of this project is to develop a new generation of tiny retinal implants that compensate for the damaged retina, without having to resort to an operation, which would be traumatic for the patient: simple local anaesthesia, a small incision (approximately 5 mm) in the sclera, followed by “gluing” of the implant over the damaged retina. The implant procedure will last barely half-an-hour. The implant is designed to work harmoniously with the natural functionalities of the eye, such as pupil dilation and eyeball movement.

How does it work?

In a healthy eye, light travels through the eyeball into the retina. The retinal photoreceptors react to the light by converting it into an electrical signal which is transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve. The brain thereafter recreates the image that we see. When the nerve connections and the optic nerve are still functioning, the artificial retina will enable the relaying of the visual information to the brain in place of the damaged retinal photoreceptors. The information can then be processed and the transmitted visual data recreated.

The bionic chip comprises a small imager, similar to that used in a digital camera, and an electronic interface including a network of electrodes designed to stimulate the optic nerve so that it sends the visual data, collected by the chip, to the brain. The implant will be powered by an external source integrated in a pair of special spectacles that the patient will have to wear. The first clinical trials on humans are scheduled for 2013.

After along long wait Clive Barker's website has announced a date for the next book in his fantastic story, Abarat.

Clive Barker - Mater Motley, 2005

…Step into a world in which everything changes 25 hours a day…

After a long long wait, Clive Barker’s website has announced a date for the next book in his fantastic story, Abarat.

Autumn 2002 brought with it Abarat; the first volume of a project that began as an intensely private series of paintings, then coalesced into an idea for 25 modestly illustrated tales collected as The Book Of Hours. The Book Of Hours became Abarat and the proliferation of paintings, combined with the burgeoning storyline, caused Abarat to split into 4 separate books.

The first volume – called simply Abarat – arrived on UK & US shelves in October 2002 and then spread across the world in foreign language editions with additional text-only softback versions in the UK and US. Early plans had the other volumes following at roughly nine-month intervals, but other projects competed for Clive’s time and attention.

The second volume – Abarat : Days of Magic, Nights of War – was published in September 2004 (with the UK edition following in October). Since then, Clive has been working on two adult novels (Scarlet Gospels and Mister B. Gone) as well as a collection of shorter works (Black Is The Devil’s Rainbow) but has continued to paint for Abarat and the astonishing volume of painted canvases (well over 500, now) are stacked in Clive’s house, lending a comforting sense of momentum to the whole series.

March 2006 saw the announcement (see below) that a fifth book is also planned to accommodate the more metaphysical adventures Clive has planned for Candy and the still-growing number of Abaratian characters and landscapes he finds himself painting. In late February 2008 Clive sat us down and read us Chapter Thirteen, set on Gorgossium, which was hot off his desk that morning! He delivered the full manuscript to his editor in the summer of 2009, but delays mean that publication of Abarat 3 is now scheduled for November 2011.

He is already busy writing Books Four and Five and has announced the title of Book Four – The Dynasty Of Dreamers. Abarat : Absolute Midnight may be black in sentiment but more glorious days will follow, with a gold cover planned for Book Five, which we can reveal has the momentous (planned) title, Abarat : The Eternal.

Candy’s adventures promise to spawn a series of movies, and the possibility of other media in the future. Clive is already painting a series of Abaratian ‘tarot’ style cards… Oh, and if the cover seems to have acquired some Harry Potter influence over the lettering of the title, consider it a sneak preview of Disney’s original movie poster design and try standing on your head and looking again… Click here for our bibliographies for Abarat and Abarat II with Clive’s commentary on Abarat, and on Abarat II. As the publication of Absolute Midnight approaches, a three-minute trailer for the book is near completion for release in the very near future…

In our culture we look to celebrities for everything from stock tips to beauty techniques even though they rarely have more knowledge about it than we do. Celebrities are thought of as trusted friends who have lived lives in the public eye and therefore can be studied and noted whenever their beliefs lead them down a particularly interesting path. And so now that a great number of celebrities are voicing their concerns over the prospect of 2012 and its potential changes, many are sitting up and taking notice.

George Lucas recently entered the public eye after an alleged conversation with Seth Rogan. Of course the story was anecdotal (taking the form, in fact, of an anecdote in this case) and so he shared it with fans shortly thereafter. Later, as it turns out, a spokesman with George Lucas denied this allegation as either creative license or a joke. But if that’s not enough to start people wondering about 2012, whether Lucas believes in it or not there are several others who are definitely ready for the coming apocalypse. Or at least hope they are.

Woody Harrelson, while conservative of the particular date, did suggest that society was heading toward major changes. The Zombieland and 2012 star said that while he wasn’t sure just how it would happen, the political and economic forces at work seemed to be heading toward what Harrelson called a “difficult time.” And while he did quote a few haunting soundbytes from presidents both past and current that haunted him (and indeed many others) there was still a glimmer of hope in his words that it was not too late for the world to change.

Talk show host Montell Williams is not only a believer in the subject, according to the show’s producer, he is also planning on doing at least one more show on it and even writing a book on the subject citing global changes and other events that will need to take place if humanity is to get through the future rough patch successfully.

Mel Gibson, when he was shooting for Apocalypto, suggested that the major Earth changes taking place had a striking parallel to the events taking place in our own society. Suggesting we may be in for a difficult time, Gibson suggested the sending of troops into Iraq for no reason was comparable to human sacrifice – an interesting parallel that might require further thought at a future date.

And the long list of believers doesn’t end there. If we are dealing with a coming change in 2012, then there will hopefully be warning signs. But whether you believe in the changes brought on by the Mayan Calendar or believe in other changes taking place completely independent of it, one thing is for sure: the world will not be standing still until then. If change is to happen, and if disasters are to take place, we will have at least some warning if those changes come from human hands.

A fresh sighting of a triangular UFO dubbed the “Dudley Dorito” racing through the skies has been reported in the Black Country – and this time it seemed to bring a friend.

Security officer Glyn Richards was having a cigarette in the garden of his home in Coppice Lane, Quarry Bank, when he saw a mysterious object with flashing lights in the sky, appearing to travel towards Dudley from Halesowen.

Moments later, he said, another UFO with a steady white light appeared and seemed to chase it off.

“I never really believed in anything like that, but it was no helicopter or plane that I’ve ever seen,” said father-of-two Mr Richards, aged 33. “I had a perfect view of it for around 20 seconds. It had flashing red lights in the centre and white lights at the end. Then another thing with just a bright white light appeared and it looked like it scared it away as it shot off in a perfectly straight line.”

It is the third reported sighting of the Dorito in as many years.

Mr Richards said he had called his nine-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son out of the house to see the objects, and following the sighting, which happened at around 7.45pm on Monday, they logged on to the internet and discovered previous sightings of the UFO on the Express & Star website — along with its own entry on Wikipedia.

“I was shocked but it was quite exciting as well — it was probably just a military plane or something but it’s interesting to think it could be something else,” he said.

In November, quality inspector Munesh Mistry reported seeing the triangular-shaped object in the skies near his home in Andrew Road, Tipton.

The object has also been spotted hovering over the Merry Hill Shopping Centre in Brierley Hill — and in February last year a UFO sighting was recorded by Sean Gibbs-Percival over the skies of Oldbury. On April 16, 2009, builders working at West Midland Safari Park were shocked to see a flying saucer-shaped object soaring above them.

Thousands of birds fall from the sky at once and masses of fish turn up dead!

Maybe the Mayans were on to something?

That’s surely what students of the famed Mayan 2012 prophecy for the end of the world had to be thinking with the news of recent eerie wildlife die-offs in Arkansas USA. Just as the calendar nudged a year closer to that fateful date, birds began falling from the sky in Arkansas and a massive fish kill occurred some 125 miles to the west.

Roughly 5,000 red-winged blackbirds fell from the sky over a mile of land near Beebe, a small town in northwest Arkansas, and observers spotted the mass fish kill near the town of Ozark. You can watch a video report on the blackbirds at ABC News:

In a statement Saturday morning, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission quoted staff ornithologist Karen Rowe as saying that such events have happened before around the world:

“Test results usually were inconclusive, but the birds showed physical trauma and that the flock could have been hit by lightning or high-altitude hail.”

Because it happened New Year’s Eve, some officials suggest that revelers shooting fireworks may have spooked the birds, to the point that they died en-masse from stress-induced cardiac arrest.

“It is unlikely they were poisoned,” Rowe said, “but a necropsy is the only way to determine if the birds died from trauma or toxin.” Tests were to begin Monday.

Meanwhile, wildlife officials say that the estimated 100,000 drum fish discovered by a tugboat captain over a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River appears to be a natural occurrence that isn’t tied to the bird kill in any way.

Smells..........fishy?

“The fish kill only affected one species of fish,”

Keith Stephens of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission told CNN.

“If it was from a pollutant, it would have affected all of the fish, not just drum fish.”

He added that fish kills in the area are common, though this one was larger than most.

UPDATE: A state veterinarian tells NBC that preliminary necropsy results from several birds show that they died of

“multiple blunt trauma to their vital organs,”

though what caused the trauma remains uncertain. According to Dr. George Badley, their stomachs were empty, so they weren’t poisoned, and they died in midair, not upon impact with the ground.

Today philtinsley.com reports that a UFO spotted twice over Yorkshire last month was recently photographed above Shropshire. The triangular craft with three yellow lights hovered above Oswestry for half an hour before disappearing. It was identical to the one spotted a month ago over Rotherham and more recently in Harrogate. John Thomas, 33, who snapped the UFO above his home said: “It looks like the same craft.”

Nick Pope, the former head of the Government’s UFO project, said: “While we currently have no explanation why certain places in the UK are alien hotspots, there are areas where mysterious objects are repeatedly witnessed, so people who want to alien-spot should definitely head to Shropshire.”

I’ve just invested two and a half hours of a Saturday evening to watch the latest and penultimate instalment of Miss Rowling’s wizard story. Shall I begin with how dull the film was or how needlessly drawn out it was? (that wasn’t an actual question) I think the term ‘ straight to DVD’ should apply to this film and I won’t be rushing to the cinema to watch part 2, I’ll wait for the DVD. Like many I loved the first handful of films; they were entertaining, uplifting, fun and well crafted. However, those sentiments for me have been replaced with dull, depressing, money raking drivel; it’s only a matter of time before Arnie, Bruce Willis or Jarjar Binks get written in to boost profits.

I haven’t read the Deathly Hallows yet but it won’t be difficult for it to be better than the film.

Now, time to get back into the vortex….think happy thoughts, think happy thoughts, think happy thoughts…..

It’s been a long time since I’ve been able to say with any degree of certainty, that the reality I’m living matches anyone else’s even remotely. The storyteller had been quiet for so long that I’d actually began to think it had gone. I would never use the word ‘die’ to describe the passing of this parasite because I don’t believe it has any physical form to decay; it is pure thought or energy. But that is irrelevent, it hadn’t gone, it was preparing for it’s most concentrated and sustained attack on my mind that it has ever attempted, an attack which plunged me into one false reality after another. There were worlds like Earth but with technology and inhabitants unlike anything we’ve seen, broken worlds where the land controlled emotions and alien conspiracies sought to shape our future. Others that were so unlike our everyday experience that I have no frame of reference with which to descibe them.

It wasn’t enough though. All of its tricks and powers couldn’t stop me from seeing the flaws, seeing the mistakes and seeing the means of escape! It’s been a long eighteen months, I still can’t believe it was that long, but now I’m back.

Its offspring are still in my mind but they will soon be free, to spread their gossamer wings and find new breeding grounds in fertile minds. Until then they will grow within me and I will nurture them until the time comes…until the time comes…
